FTP has been used for decades to exchange data between computers, and it is available in encrypted form via SSH as SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol). This protocol can be used under Windows with the SSH client or SFTP client WinSCP. The freeware knows not only SFTP, but also the protocols FTP, SCP and WebDAV and is an alternative to FileZilla.
Encrypted data exchange
Since OpenSSH, which is used under Linux for data exchange, does not run under Windows, its users are dependent on an alternative such as the SFTP client WinSCP. The open source software handles data exchange via FTP or SFTP between computers and servers, establishing encrypted tunnel connections with SSL or TLS respectively. The freeware supports the transfer protocols SFTP, FTP, SCP and WebDAV. During configuration, WinSCP already selects the appropriate protocol based on the port number, but this can be changed. In addition, the entry of the computer ID, user name and password is required for authentication when establishing a connection.
Graphical user interface for data exchang
WinSCP comes as an FTP-via-SSH client with a graphical user interface, so no command line commands need to be entered. Data is transferred by simply moving files and folders from the source directory to the destination directory. For this purpose, WinSCP, like FileZilla, has two halves of the window: One contains, for example, a directory of its own computer and the other the folder of the remote server to which the data is to be moved. Also tree structures represent WinSCP graphically.
Freeware for installation and as portable version
WinSCP by Martin Prikryl is available as freeware for Windows for free via our download button. Beside the setup file for installation, a portable version is downloadable, which works without installation. Alternatively, there is WinSCP Portable by Portableapps, which can also be used as portable software without installation from a USB stick. If you don't like WinSCP, FileZilla or FileZilla Portable is worth a look.
